In a move that has New Jersey’s cannabis enthusiasts more excited than a squirrel in a nut factory, a proposal has been put forth to legalize the home cultivation of cannabis for patients registered under the state’s medical cannabis program.
The Great Cannabis Conundrum
Currently, in the Garden State (oh, the irony!), while you can legally light up a joint for both medical and adult recreational use, growing your own cannabis at home is as welcome as a skunk at a garden party. It’s a felony that could land you a five-year vacation in the state penitentiary. And no, they don’t let you grow cannabis there either.
The Green Bill of Hope
State Sen. Troy Singleton, the bill’s sponsor and a man who clearly knows his way around a garden, told Spotlight News that lawmakers had tried to give the state a chance to put some pricing controls in place. But now, he believes it’s time for the legislature to step in and do some garden-tending of its own.
Even Gov. Phil Murphy, a man not known for his horticultural prowess, told News 12 that he’s “very much open-minded” to letting adults grow their own cannabis. He even went so far as to say that if he were a betting man, he’d wager that this is exactly where things are headed.
The Future of Homegrown Cannabis in New Jersey
Under the proposed law, patients could cultivate their own little green heaven with up to four mature and four immature plants at a time. And while it’s not quite the cannabis forest some might dream of, it’s a start. After all, every great garden starts with a single seedling.
So, New Jersey, get your gardening gloves ready. It looks like cannabis cultivation could soon be coming to a backyard near you!
